The Fast-Food Giant Removes AI-Created Holiday Commercial In the Wake of Online Criticism.
The global fast-food chain has removed a holiday commercial made with Artificial Intelligence after encountering significant criticism on social media.
The 45-second spot was created via AI-generated video and was originally released publicly for the Dutch branch of McDonald's back on 6 December.
Audience Response and Decision to Pull
Soon after it aired, commenters criticized the use of AI in the commercial. Many described it as "creepy" and "awkwardly stitched together".
"This moment represents an key lesson as we examine the effective utilization of Artificial Intelligence," commented a statement from McDonald's Netherlands.
The commercial was created for the brand by Dutch agency TBWA\Neboko and American firm The Sweetshop. It depicted various scenarios that can go wrong during the holidays, with the theme "the most terrible time of the year".
The Movement of AI-Generated Ads
Commercials that include AI-created content have become a growing phenomenon among large brands, particularly for the Christmas period.
- Another beverage giant has similarly launched consecutive AI-generated holiday commercials.
- Inherent Limitations: Because clips created with current AI video tools are susceptible to degrade the longer they run, most AI video outputs tend to be roughly a few seconds in length.
- Industry Concerns: The video also raised fears about the replacement of human roles in the advertising industry, with some observers noting it might negatively impact opportunities for actors.
Defense from the Creators
Following the ad being taken down, a producer's CEO, Melanie Bridge, defended the advert.
She stated, the production process required "over a month and a half" and involved creating "numerous versions" which were then crafted in post-production "just as we would on any traditional production".
"This wasn't just an AI gimmick," she commented. "We consider it a film."
Divisive Public Reception
While the Dutch McDonald's commercial was mostly criticized, the reception for some AI-assisted campaigns has been divisive.
For instance, a recent AI-generated Christmas ad from another major brand according to analysis achieved a significant "positive feedback" from online commenters.
However, various brands have also faced scrutiny for using the technique in their campaigns. Luxury fashion house Valentino, for example, was criticized for ads that some called "low-effort" and "disturbing".
The situation underscores the ongoing discussion within the advertising and production sectors about the trade-off between AI efficiency and creative integrity.
